  • Prior to reinstalling the Bone you could take run a software, called Magic Jelly Bean - KeyFinder, which volition retrieve production keys for the Os and another applications, including MS Office. All the same, since yous have already reinstalled the Os, there isn't much you tin exercise other than maybe taking a hullo-res pic of the sticker and trying to enlarge it digitally to try to make out the messages/numbers.

  • Produkey won't retrieve it if he has already re-installed. However information technology will pull the key for Win7 and down for sure.

Produkey is sooo much nicer. No install needed.

    What can I do?

What kind of Windows is this - retail, OEM, VL?  Where is this key - a sticker on the machine, a post it note, something else?

    Agreed!

If book licensing, you can just log on to the site and go it.

If OEM, yous can give Dell/HP/Whoever your serial number and they should be able to tell you lot what it should be.

If retail.....hmmmm, this may be the function where yous're screwed.  You might exist able to call Microsoft.  Maybe....

  • If yous still have the Windows.old in C drive (If you lot did not format C bulldoze).. Produckey or majicjelly bean can yet recover the cardinal from the windows.old binder. accept it crawl to c:\windows.old\windows\system32 (if i'k non mistaken) then it should get that central.

If you don't have the PK and you do have the disc, you can call Microsoft and I think they can replace lost PK'southward for fifteen bucks..They volition just get the function number from the disc..

  • I'thousand assuming this is a retail license and not OEM?  Not a Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, etc.

If then you're pretty much out of luck.  You lot'll need to buy a new license.

Unless you accept a backup of the old drive at that place's really no style to recover the primal after you've formatted the drive.

Next fourth dimension brand sure you put the COA sticker on a spot on the instance where information technology won't get worn downwardly.  Sometimes (on my personal machines) I'll actually put the sticker on the inside of the example side panel.

    Actually, no.

I've encounter this occasionally. Each time I chosen the Microsoft Activation line, got to a human being, and explained the situation. A new license key was provided each fourth dimension at no price.

Well, no offense, but keeping track of your licensing is generally considered something that'southward up to the terminate user.  If it's OEM there are plenty of possible options, but you oasis't yet answered the question of your license blazon so nosotros can't actually offer more than help.

Side note: This is, of course, why information technology's important to verify you really have a valid product key earlier wiping a drive. Even if Windows wasn't functional or able to boot, ProduKey tin can pull the fundamental from a slaved difficult drive. Information technology'south pretty wizard like that.

  • What version of W7 is it Sean? Tin you post a motion-picture show of the label? Someone with good eyesight might be able to get it.

A while back I noticed lots of very cheap copies of W7 (with code) for sale on ebay although I would bank check the validity of these before buying.

  • If the organization has a valid COA (even if illegible) you can utilise a VLA copy of the same OS to reinstall and be in compliance with Microsoft licensing.

  • As several accept suggested already, endeavor taking a hi-res photograph and enlarging information technology.   It's astonishing how much easier things are to read when magnified a few dozen times.

I've done this several times with brand new product fundamental labels, just because some ill humored @#$^% person who designed the !#$%@#$% labels thinks it'southward funny to use !@#$ microscopic !@#$%%^ fonts!!!

By the mode, there are several nice little Windows scripts you lot can use to go either Windows keys or Office keys.  I prefer this method over downloading & running executables.

    Only Google "wscript product keys".

  • Don't know if someone already said this or not?

If Spiceworks is scanning it, the license will be listed in the 'software' category. I had one laptop where the fundamental had been rubbed beyond readability. However, SW had the key listed in it'south software department and I merely used that. It worked just fine.

Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • Honestly, if it's an OEM from the large OEMs (HP, dell, etc) Even if he COULD pull a key, information technology'd probable exist the royalty master oem central that wouldn't activate. That's what the key on the COA is for.

Try Actress difficult to read it, zoom in with motion picture, etc

    Call the oem

    Call microsoft

    Use another license.

About only options. Everything else suggested is assuming there is a central to be read on the hdd, of which there'south not. Equally a side notation, this is why they moved COAs on laptops from the bottom to nether the bombardment, equally they'd go rubbed off or be un-readable.

  • Take a Hi Def photo of the COA and try to identify (do not post on the Internet!) the missing parts. It's more easier to meet a big image then a small blurry COA.

If that doesn't work then it'due south time for a new license, sorry.

  • None of these keyfinder products will help if the OP already reformatted.

If it'due south a name brand PC/laptop, you can simply call or society recovery media (discs) for that particular model.  Running the discs will substantially bring the computer back to Day ane equally information technology was when you showtime purchased the figurer, and it will not ask for a Windows key during setup.

  • As some people hither have already mentioned, I would recommend Magic Jellybean Keyfinder simply considering it is a small download and runs without a hitch.  It can also find keys for other software you lot have installed like Microsoft Function!

  • If you need to backup and restore your OEM cert (pre-wipe of course).  This volition backup AND restore the OEM cert to Actuate Windows besides as generate a text file with the Windows key.

  • how about the bar code? do yous have a bar lawmaking scanner?

if the bar code is still in-tack, you lot can scan the bar code and go the fundamental.

  • I had this issue and if yous contact MS, they'll inquire you to take a movie of the product cardinal and decipher information technology for you. It worked for me, yous may want to try that option. Since then, I have created documentation that's centrally located with product key to friction match service tag and the type of OS,  in example this should occur once more, I just have to look at a spreadsheet.

Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • We had the aforementioned issue, I was able to take a picture of the product key with a digital camera and accident it up to run across the letters better.  It worked surprisingly well.

  • If the machine was ever inventoried by Spiceworks, information technology volition accept the key in the motorcar'due south software list. If the machine was mass produced like Dell's, then it uses a bulk key and not the i listed on the sticker. Y'all'll see it reflected in Spiceworks a well, multiple machines will all evidence the same key.

    Blurry?

a COA sticker may skin, or start maybe even appear to look rubbed abroad, but how does it become blurry?

I'd enquire a friend or someone else to really look at it with you run across what they see, you could become lucky and snag it - and then you need to be sure y'all notation it downwardly for hereafter.

  • two things

    1. you lot have wiped the hard drive and then using jellybean pick gone

    2. if you lot deceit read the license label (happens a lot, especially on laptops) y'all cant install

    Withal

try to install windows again and skip over the license cardinal. this should get the computer running and give you xxx days to beg Microsoft to help

Does the laptop have recovery media / image backup. Using that would alleviate need for a license central equally they tend to accept their own volume OEM license every bit part of the prebuild and windows is already activated afterward restore

if you didn't build the disc or don't have 1, and a big manufacturer, call them and you might exist able to buy recovery media for $20 then something, less than the cost of a new windows seven license that'due south for sure!

And I learnt something else - didn't realise that Spiceworks inventory does the software keys every bit well - +1 for Spiceworks

  • If it is a bulk load from Dell, use the original media (Win7 CD) to do the fresh install.  I take done this and it automatically picks up the vendor'south (Dell) VLK in 99% of the cases.  Rarely take I had to employ the key on the sticker, which I have recorded elsewhere anyway.  Unfortunately SW has the cardinal as installed, ordinarily the VLK.

If you're not using Dell, then hopefully your vendor'southward media works similarly.
